El Cerrito High School
El Cerrito High School is looking for an in-person parliamentary debate coach for the 2021-22 season. The ideal candidate would be a local undergraduate or graduate student with high school parli experience who can assume both training and administrative responsibilities, and who can attend 1-2 afterschool practices per week (probably Tuesday/Thursday), and some tournaments.
Candidates who do not meet all of those criteria are nonetheless encouraged to apply. Those with experience in debate events other that parli will also be considered, with the understanding that the El Cerrito program is committed to non-technical debate that does not emphasize theory or jargon.
The previous coach of five years will be local and available to assist with curriculum development, and provide other guidance as needed.
About El Cerrito: El Cerrito High School, located 15 minutes from UC Berkeley, has a student population of approximately 1,400 students who are extremely economically and racially diverse, with no particular group constituting a majority of the student body. The debate team had approximately 20 active members this year. The team has a proud debate history, boasting the 2019 CHSSA state champions in parliamentary debate, and the 2002 NSDA national champion in Lincoln Douglas. El Cerrito has qualified teams to the National Parliamentary Debate League’s Tournament of Champions for the past three years, and was the first non-East Coast school to win the New York Parliamentary Debate League Invitational this past year. For two of the last three years, an El Cerrito team was ranked in the top ten nationally. El Cerrito also has an active speech team, with its own head coach. The team has a very active and supportive parent group.
Stipend offered. Amount will depend on experience and time commitment.
