Many of our awards get a nominee from someone on the committee, and the rest of the committee says, “that’s a good idea” and that’s who it is. For the Coach of the Year, the District Chair just picks the person who has it coming that year in the District Chair’s opinion. We offer two scholarships to graduating seniors in our District — one for an outstanding student overall, and one specifically for a Congressional Debate kid. Both are named after legendary coaches in our District, and each team contributes $10 toward each as part of registration. Like many of your Districts do, the Committee reads the letters of nomination for these and votes. We use three readers for each, which usually allows us to omit the coaches with “kids in play.” We then choose the Student of the Year from one of the two scholarship winners based on which one of them fits the SOY requirements best.
